Educational attainment (NHC)

Description

Highest completed level of education in the Norwegian population aged 25 years and over.

To see age-standardised figures, click on the Measures menu, select 'filter' and then 'Per cent, age-standardised'. Age standardisation reduces the effect of differing age distributions when groups are compared over time and between geographical regions. Yearly figures are adjusted according to 5-year age groups in the Norwegian population per 1 January 2012.

Classification of Highest level of education:
- Compulsory education (primary and lower secondary school)
- Upper secondary school
- Tertiary education. Further divided into tertiary ed, short (4 years or less) and tertiary ed, long (more than 4 years).

Notes

In 2006, the Norwegian Standard Classification of Education was revised to better reflect international standards. Figures for all years in Norhealth are calculated according to the new classification.

Keywords

Geographical level

Country, health region, counties

Gender

Both genders, men, women

Age groups

All adults (25+ years), 25-44, 30-39, 45-74, 75 years and over.

Time periods

1980-2017

Kind of Data

Statistics based on fewer than 3 cases is hidden to protect the identity of the patients. Figures are also hidden when the population group in which the cases originate, is smaller than 10 persons.

If more than 20 per cent of the cases in a time series are hidden due to the abovementioned reasons, the complete time series is hidden to avoid giving a skewed impression.
The complete time series is also hidden if more than 50 per cent of the values in the series are based on 6 or fewer cases. In this case, the figures are regarded as too uncertain.

Frequency of updates

Collection

Educational attainment of the population is updated each year according to newly completed education levels during the previous 12 months. All data is stored within Statistics Norway's National Education Database. Education completed abroad is sent to Statistics Norway by the State Educational Loan Fund.

Weighting

Utdanning, utdannelse, utdanningsnivå, grunnskole, videregående, universitet, høyskole, ungdomskole

Data quality

The data quality is very good. Individual educational institutions in Norway have a duty to provide data to Statistics Norway. All data goes through a considerable control and checking process to eliminate as many errors as possible. Some pupils or students may be left out if Statistics Norway does not receive data from a known institution, or if they are unaware of a newly established educational institution. The weakest point of these figures is education completed abroad and the educational attainment of people who have immigrated to Norway after they have finished their education. People with unknown or no completed education are not included in the figures. The majority are immigrants with missing information about their education level. This effects around 4 per cent of the population.

Restrictions

There are well documented correlations between educational attainment, material standard of living and health.
